QR Codes: Super Powered Barcodes
We all know by sight what a QR code looks like. We all know that it allows us to launch a website, pay via PayNow, and retrieve calling card information. However, not may people know that the “QR” in QR code stands for Quick Response. In fact, QR code is an evolution of the barcode that we are so familiar with. We scan packaging barcodes when making payments at the supermarket. We scan our IC when we register ourselves at the hospitals and polyclinics.
It Started With Barcodes
The barcode we see has many formats, and the format 3 of 9 is the most popular standard. It was the first barcode set that takes both Alphanumeric characters.
My first experience of implementing barcodes dates back to 1997. We allowed registry officers (ROs) in the government ministry to generate barcode labels for every file in the ministry. Their solution allowed them to register every file on loan to officers and every file they collected back. This solution meant data entry was faster and more accurate. These projects became the mainstay for every large logistics organisation to keep track of stocks moving in and out of their warehouses.
Barcode 3 of 9 is simple to implement. You can download a font set to create barcodes on your computer. All you need in order to read the barcode is a barcode reader. We attach the scanner to the computer, just like we do for a keyboard. More expensive readers that are portable and can store the data, like one we see used by delivers are also available. Regrettably, the simplicity of the barcode is its shortcoming.. The number of characters cannot exceed 43.. Hence, the QR code was born.
QR Codes: Barcode on Steroids
The QR code is a barcode on steroids. It holds a hundred times more information than a standard barcode. We saw them used in name cards so users could scan the code and save the information on their phones. Next, we went to marketers, placing QR codes onto marketing pamphlets.. These codes bring a person to the web pages marketers want customers to visit.
Since 2017, PayNow started accepting QR Code payments, his paves the way for higher adoption of cashless transactions in both F&Bs and retail outlets. NETS terminal and transaction fees hinder digitalisation and are no longer an excuse. Merchants receive immediate payment, unlike most payment gateways with a minimum holding period.. We are seeing bigger corporations, such as telcos using PayNow QR codes on their monthly bills.. From a business point of view, the appeal is undeniable. Customers can make payments with ease, while merchants receive them promptly.
Adapting QR Codes (or even Barcodes) to Your Business
We help customers build a system that integrates their invoicing system to a dynamic QR code that accepts payment through PayNow, whether sent through WhatsApp, printed on invoices or dynamically generated on screen for online or over-the-counter transactions.
