Before You Code: The Importance of UI/UX in App/Website Development
So, you’ve got a brilliant idea for an app or website, and you’ve even found a skilled developer to bring it to life. Excitement is in the air, but before you hit the code button, there’s a critical stage that demands your attention: UI/UX design.
In the rush to see your concept materialize, it’s easy to underestimate the power of a well-thought-out user interface (UI) and user experience (UX). This initial phase is the cornerstone of a successful digital venture, influencing everything from user satisfaction to long-term engagement.
Why UI/UX Matters
Imagine constructing a house without a blueprint. It might stand, but how comfortable and functional will it be? Skipping the UI/UX stage is akin to building without a plan. Sure, your developer can create the functionality, but will it meet the needs and expectations of your users?
Here are some other factors that makes UI/UX design stage important:
User Centric Approach
UI/UX design centers around your users. How easily can they navigate through your app or website? Is the design intuitive, or does it leave users scratching their heads?
First Impressions Count
Your app or website’s visual appeal is the first thing users notice. A clean, aesthetically pleasing design creates a positive first impression, setting the stage for a favorable user experience.
Functionality and Efficiency
UI/UX design isn’t just about looks. It’s about functionality. An efficiently designed interface ensures that users can perform tasks seamlessly, without unnecessary hurdles.
Long Term Cost Efficiency
A well-designed UI/UX not only enhances the user experience but also minimizes the need for extensive modifications or fixes down the line.
Our UI/UX Design Consultation Process
Aria adopts the five-stage design thinking model as championed by the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design at Stanford. Our UI/UX design consultation would mean immersing ourselves in each of the following stages:
Research
Also called the “Emphatise” stage. We begin our UI/UX process by doing research on potential users of your website/app. We will do this by touching base with participants that fit the profile of your target user personas.
Define
Research will highlight to us the potential users expectations, user delights and/or user fears that we may need to address in the end product. From there, we define the most crucial needs of your target users in the form of user stories.
Ideate
This is where the actual user experience of the product gets fleshed out. At this stage, we map out the user journey (based on the user stories created during the “Define” stage). Our team will begin to wireframe the product.
Prototype
Once the mapping of the user journey is set, we will convert the wireframe sketches into a hi fidelity mockup. The mockup will look closer to the actual product with full colours as well as an interactive interface.
Test
Our prototype will be into the hands of testers. These testers will consist the Quality Assurance team, and the external participants who fit the profile of the target user personas.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long will it take to complete a UI/UX design?
The length of time ultimately depends the scale and complexity of the design, the goals and milestones you are comfortable with, and the approach used for product development.
Is it an enhancement of an existing product or a completely new product? Is development done only after the full design is released? Or are designs needed at each development sprints? Answers to these questions and more would help determine the timeframe for the design exercise.
What do you offer as part of the UI/UX design process?
Our UI/UX consultation covers all five stages of the Hasso Plattner design thinking process:
User Research Creation:
Our consultation can cover creation of questionaires, polls or even interview questions:
We do not outwardly do the following:
- Gathering the participants for user research.
- Interviewing the participants of the user research.
User Research Analysis:
Tied together with the above stage, we will collate the findings of our user research, define the specific needs of the user, and create the personas and user journey from the results.
User Journey and UX Design
This is where the bulk of the work happen. At this stage, we plot the specific tasks that a user will require in order to complete certain tasks on the platform (desktop and/or mobile) into user stories. Thereafter, we create a low fidelity design (usually a colourless representation of the design with mockup text) to illustrate the stages of the journey.
UI Design and Prototyping
Once we determine the UX design, the next stage will be about creating a full design with colours and writing. We can also create a visually working prototype of the design that works almost like the actual project.
Design Testing
Design testing comprises of letting a group of participants to test out the app design and collating their feedback on its usability.
Can we skip the user research part and just focus on the design?
It is possible for us to skip the “Research” and “Define” steps of the UI/UX design consultation, provided:
- If you are improving an existing solution that already have a well established customer and/or user base; or
- Have already conducted a user research, and is able to provide us the required sets of data to help us with the design process.
Though we can technically do a design without the above user research steps, such designs will be based on biasness and pure assumptions and will be devoid of user-centric sensibilities. This may lead to a less than satisfactory result, and a lengthier (and more expensive) development process.
Can you provide examples or case studies of projects you have worked on?
